Scriptural and Historical Significance

  • Puranic Reference: According to the Shiva Purana (Kotirudra Samhita), Ravana obtained a Shivalinga through austerities on Kailash and, while carrying it to Lanka, was compelled to set it down on the ground on the way, whereupon the linga became established here. The name is believed to derive from Shiva's form as "Vaidya" (physician), who healed the heads Ravana had offered.
  • Hridaya Peeth: According to tradition, Sati's heart fell here, so this is also a Shaktipeeth known as the "Hard Peeth"; within the complex, the temple of Mata Parvati (Jai Durga) faces the main temple.
  • Historical Reference: The present main temple is believed to have been built/restored by Raja Puranmal of Gidhaur at the end of the 16th century (around 1596 CE).
  • Other Tradition: On the basis of the stotra's phrase "परल्यां वैद्यनाथं च" (Paralyam Vaidyanatham cha), the Parli Vaijnath temple in Beed district, Maharashtra, is also recognised as the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga; both traditions are firmly established in their respective regions.

Key Features, Architecture, Rituals and Aarti

  • Style: A stone temple in the Nagara style with a shikhara approx. 72 feet high; the main complex contains 22 temples in all.
  • Panchashool: Unlike the trident (trishul) of most Shiva temples, a panchashool (five-pronged emblem) crowns the shikhara here; before Mahashivratri the panchashool is taken down, specially worshipped and then reinstalled.
  • Gathbandhan Tradition: The "Gathbandhan" tradition of joining the shikharas of the Shiva and Parvati temples with a sacred red cloth is unique to this place; devotees offer it for marital well-being.
  • Worship: Sardari Puja (shodashopachara, sixteen-fold worship) in the morning and Shringar Puja in the evening; offering Gangajal (Ganga water) on the linga holds special significance.
