Two smaller groups: four rituals of the agrarian year, and eight performed for the protection of home, family and work. This guide covers both, and is careful about the second, because it is the corner of the tradition where people are most easily exploited.
Two distinct groups sit in this category: four rituals of the agricultural year, and eight performed for protection — of a home, a family, a business, or a person. Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue records twelve in all.
The Agrarian Year
Bhoomi Puja for Sowing opens the season with worship of Bhoomi Devi before seed goes into the ground — the agricultural counterpart of the Bhoomi Pujan before building in our Vastu and Business Rituals guide. Rain Invocation Puja is a community observance during drought, addressed to Varuna and Indra.
Cattle hold a central place. Gopashtami honours cows and Krishna as cowherd, and Mattu Pongal — the second day of Pongal, described in our Surya Rituals guide — is given over entirely to the cattle who worked the year's fields, washed, painted and garlanded.
These sit alongside the community harvest observances — Karam, Sarhul, Nuakhai, Chapchar Kut — in our Regional Rituals guide, and the go-grasa practice described in our Miscellaneous guide.
Protection Observances
The second group addresses trouble. Drishti Puja removes the effects of the evil eye and takes ten minutes; the nazar utarna of salt, chillies or a lemon-and-chilli string is its household form and is kept in most Indian homes with no priest at all.
Kaal Bhairav Raksha Puja addresses the fierce guardian described in our Shiva Rituals guide, and Raksha Kavach Dharan Vidhi is the consecration and wearing of a protective thread or amulet. Vastu Dosh Rakshak Puja belongs with the Vastu observances, and Grah Kalesh Nivaran Puja is performed where a household is in persistent discord.
Business Negative Energy Removal Puja and Court Case Success Puja apply the same idea to work and litigation. Bhoot Pret Badha Nivaran Puja addresses what the tradition understands as malevolent influence.
Please read this before arranging anything in the protection group.
- These observances have a long and genuine place in the tradition, and Avyani records them for that reason. They are not treatment, and Avyani does not predict or guarantee any outcome from them.
- Where the difficulty involves a person's health, behaviour or state of mind, see a doctor first. Symptoms that have historically been read as possession or affliction — seizures, confusion, hallucination, severe distress, a sudden change in personality — have medical and psychiatric causes that are diagnosable and treatable. Delay causes real harm, and people have been seriously hurt by treatment framed as ritual. Nothing here is medical advice, and no ritual should replace medical or mental-health care.
- Where the matter is legal, take a lawyer's advice. A Court Case Success Puja is not a case strategy, and this guide makes no claim about any legal outcome.
- Be wary of anyone who creates urgency or fear. A practitioner who diagnoses an affliction you did not come with, escalates the remedy each time you return, or asks for increasing sums is not operating within the tradition's own norms. Prices should be stated plainly in advance, and a second opinion is always reasonable.
